City Power theft: 8 held

Johannesburg - Eight people, including three senior City Power officials, were arrested on charges of theft and corruption in two Johannesburg suburbs on Tuesday, police said.
The three officials were arrested at the power utility's Booysens office and the five others, including two former employees and two sub-contractors, were apprehended in Kempton Park, Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini said.
"The eight were believed to be part of a syndicate who were stealing City Power property including copper cables and transformers worth millions of Rands," he said. They were then selling it to sub-contractors.
Police and the Vaal Rand Organised Crime Unit had initiated an operation in 2008 after City Power complained about the problem.
"During the investigation, we identified nine suspects. We obtained warrants of arrest, and today we arrested eight people," said Dlamini.
"We have already seized three vehicles - a Nissan hardbody, a BMW and a Mitsubishi. Also confiscated was one transformer and a cable drum."
