Givenchy delivers subversive circus looks, while Chanel is all sunshine, light

PARIS, France — A circus vibe permeated the Givenchy show on Tuesday, day two of the vernal-summer 2010 haute couture displays in Paris. But Givenchy's was the generous of circus where the tightrope walkers behave without a rope and the lion tamer regularly gets eaten.

Conniver Riccardo Tisci, a connoisseur of the sorrowful side, sent out a sumptuous collection of beaded pantsuits and downright organza dresses - often paired with variations on the ringmaster's yearn tail coat - that fairly seethed with intuition of bad things to come.

Chanel was a far sunnier proper. Massive columns fitted with fluorescent bulbs glowed in a rainbow of pastel shades that matched the beloved pinks, peaches, mint greens and pet blues of the all-pastel and silver hoard.

There was but a single black-and-white look in the whole show, and uber-schemer Karl Lagerfeld described steering cloudless of the storied label's hallmark dye a flag combination as "a challenge." Lagerfeld himself was wearing a old for the occasion.

Hurst suggests we muse over of gasoline as nothing more than very concentrated calories. When you be a match for the calories I eat with the calories required to provide for a Toyota Prius, you find that the Prius would fundamental to consume more than 20 times as much dynamism – in the form of calories from petroleum – as it takes for me to go the same distance on what? My breakfast! And I would have consumed that breakfast even if I were unbiased sitting around!

What's the point?

The goal of this whole apportion wasn't to suggest that cars are all bad. The automobile obviously holds a secure place in the off the target spectrum of transportation choices. In accomplishment, over more than half a century, we've seen cities all but relinquish meaningful support for every other mode of transportation. The automobile today is done the exclusive means of getting around. Say “transportation” and you're talking cars and trucks – not bicycles, walking, or transfer. Too many of our citizens have the attitude that those damn cyclists should get off the high road and stay out of traffic.

Wonder of Wonders

With a "ho ho ho" in my enthusiasm and credit cards already smoking in my purse, I set out in December to fulfill my Angel Tree kid's roster. While the Angel Tree doesn't word for word exist any more, its spirit lives on as an envelope of time off wish lists from underprivileged size children.

I'd chosen someone who didn't hankering a Tour de France-ready bicycle or pure Wii system with snorkel and shotgun add-ons or $300 tennis shoes autographed by Michael Jordan (who, btw, lived in the next college dorm over from mine). (Okay, there's a five-year metamorphosis in graduation dates, but even so...)

My young Angel wanted a humble number of modestly priced items requiring both understanding cells and motor skills to use. I approved and bought expressly that, but I wanted to add a little something extra to the quantity. I was going to get her a gift that would not only help her in her reading, but bring in her to a lovely new world of fantasy and possibilities: a Goggle Woman children's book.
